Born in Czechosvaklia and raised in England, multidisciplinary artist Vera Frenkel lives and works in Toronto. Artist residence projects have taken her, among others, to the Slade School of Art, London; the School of the Chicago Art Institute; the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna; the McLuhan Program in Culture and Technology, Toronto; the OK Centrum fuer Gegenwartskunst, Linz, and the Royal University of Stockholm. Frenkels solo exhibitions include the Riksutstaellningar tour of her work through Germany, Scandinavia and Poland (1997-98); the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa (1996); the Gesellschaft fuer Aktuelle Kunst, Bremen (1996); and the current exhibition at the Centre dArt Contemporain Basse-Normandie (now on view). Frenkel has participated in documenta ix, the 1997 Venice Biennale Club Media; Virutalitaet des Verschindens (Neue Gesellschaft fuer Bildende Kunst, Berlin, 1997); and the touring group exhibitions Deep Storage (Haus der Kunst, Munich; Nationalgalerie, Berlin; Kunstmuseum Duesseldorf, PS1, N.Y, Henry Museum, Seattle); Track Records (Oakville Galleries; Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, Ottawa; Presentation House, Vancouver), and Spirits at the Crossings (Setagaya Museum, Tokyo; Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto; Contemporary Art Museum, Sapporo). In 1996, she received an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from, the Nova Scotia Collage of Art and Design. Frenkels most recent public presentation, Inside Exile: Messiahs, Migration and Loss, took place at the Museum of Modern Art, NY, October 1998. |
