Xavier Le Roy (F) studied molecular and cellular biology at the University of Montpellier, beginning his doctorate in 1987 and also taking classes in contemporary dance. After three years of specialised research into breast cancer, he finished his thesis in 1990 and moved to Paris for further dance training with Ruth Barnes and Anne Koren.

He also worked with Christian Bourrigault (Compagnie de l’Alambic). He has been living in Berlin since 1992, performing with the interdisciplinary group, Detektor. In 1993, he was involved in the start-up of the Le KWATT collective and produced pieces with them that include Things I hate to admit (1994), Narcisse Flip (1997) and, in 1996, Blut et Boredom with Laurent Goldring. Since 1996, he has been the artist in residence at the Podewil contemporary arts centre in Berlin. In 1998, he participated in Crash Landing, an improvisation project put on by Meg Stuart in Lisbon, and created his own solo performance, Self Unfinished. 1998 was also the year in which his lecture-performance with slides, Product of Circumstances, received its premiere, and in 1999 he began his project entitled E.X.T.E.N.S.I.O.N.S., with the participation of dancers, choreographers, video artists and theorists..
