SMSý SLOGAN MESSAGE SYSTEM
Preamble :
The more the possibilities of diffusion of language are large the more the language tends to be shortened and compressed. This is a paradox we inhabit since we have definitively shifted to a “digital” driven communication.
If the spectrum of communication has broadened fastly during half a century the level of attention/concentration/ has decreased. As we are constantly sollicited as visitors or spectators we cannot afford to take care of every message directed to us.
This tendency to reduce every comunication system to the most compact form is present everywhere: from t-shirts to advertising, from the common youth vocabulary to the computer jargon…
This pervasive syntax has even intruded the telephony system*. At the beginning, the
big corporations had the vision of developing an integral system of wireless communication: the WAP. It was supposed to play sound and video and access the internet from anywhere anytime;- the killing app. In the meantime, to give the customers a taste of what will be the future, they added to their telephones what was supposed to be a transitory technology: the Short System Message, SMS.
It was a nomadic e-mail miniature service. In the minds of the telecom executives, this system was supposed to be quickly superseded by a more ambitious one that would enable the streaming of sound and video. But their customers decided to make intensive use of this modest facility despised by its creators. The discipline of compressing/compacting the language into the shortest expressions and its ease of manipulation made the SMS (Short Message System) the elected technology to communicate private thoughts and sudden changes in rendez-vous or schedule.Today the whole wap project has fallen down because of the market crisis and the today’s selling argument for the cell phone remains this supposed-to- be-obsolete technology.
The project
The aim of SMS SLOGAN MESSAGE SYSTEM is to experiment with the compression of language and its relationship to diffusion and political meaning. To find poetico politic correlation between the ephemere temporality of the SMS and of the slogan, to confront the public aspect of the reclaim/protest aspect of slogan and the intimate reception device of the cell phone.
A database of slogans
short messages have a short live span. They are stocked in memory until the number of 10 and then are destroyed. Slogans are also transitory. On every lips for certain occasions, they survive in the collective memory with little systematic archiving. The idea is to offer a tool for the preservation of protest and artistic slogans.
